SCHOLAR DESCRIPTION

Euchar Gravina is a Maltese composer and artistic director based in London. His compositions, performed at international festivals and venues, span pieces for soloists and chamber ensembles to choral and orchestral works, as well as compositions featuring electronics. Euchar holds the position of Artistic Director at St John’s Waterloo and Waterloo Festival.

Commissions and projects include works for the London Symphony Orchestra, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Aldeburgh Festival, Teatru Manoel, Teatru Malta, Psappha and GBSR Duo, with performances by Oxford's Christ Church Cathedral Choir, as well as pianist Gabi Sultana and mezzo-soprano Marvic Monreal.

Gravina won the APS National Composition Competition Special Jury Prize (2012), served as composer-in-residence with young ensembles at Sage Gateshead (2017-18), was awarded a place on the Peter Reynolds Composition Studio (Vale of Glamorgan Festival) (2020-1), and participated in the Dartington Summer School and Festival (2021). He was a Britten Pears Young Artist (2019-22).

As Artistic Director at St John’s Waterloo, Euchar has developed several creative projects including residencies, exhibitions, concert series, heritage, educational, social justice and outreach programmes. He has fostered partnerships with organisations like the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Streetwise Opera and Accumulate.

Gravina studied at the Royal Academy of Music (2015-17). He is a London Symphony Orchestra Soundhub Associate (2023-25).
