Charles Buttigieg, a 25-year-old baritone from Gozo, Malta, began his singing journey at 11 by joining a local choir. He has studied voice under Maltese soprano Juliette Bisazza and received support from the BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation. Charles has performed in various operatic productions, sharing the stage with world-renowned opera singers.
He trained at the Mediterranean Opera Studio & Festival, where he performed roles such as Marcello in La Bohème and Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor. In 2018, Charles was invited to study at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, graduating with honors. During his time there, he made his debut in roles like Masetto in Don Giovanni and Figaro in The Barber of Seville.
Charles has won multiple awards, including an Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera. He has performed with tenor Joseph Calleja at Opera Naples, with Andrea Bocelli in Malta, and headlined his own concert in Gozo for three consecutive years. In 2023, he was selected to compete in Placido Domingo’s prestigious Operalia competition and performed at a 9/11 Memorial Concert in Houston, Texas. Starting in September 2024, Charles will be based in Florence as a Mascerade Opera Resident Artist.
