Carl Borg, born in Malta in 1998, is composer of contemporary classical music. His output includes a concertino for trumpet and orchestra, pieces for various smaller ensembles, solo instruments, vocal works, and music for media. Borg’s piece for solo trumpet, Scuttle, was recently selected as one of the winners of the ‘Say it in 60 Seconds’ project within the ‘Oxford Festival of the Arts’. ?rajjiet il-Bastjun, for concert band, was one of the winners of the 2021 Edition of the ‘Malta Band Festival’ composition competition. One of his latest works, Broken Circle for solo flute, was premiered by Dr Rebecca Hall (principal flute, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra) in Belgrade for the Serbian Flute Association, and has also been performed at the Royal Welsh College of Drama and Music.
Borg was involved in music from an early age, starting his studies at the Imperial Band Club with Anthony Borg. Following studies with Geoffrey Thomas, he read for a B. Mus. (Hons.) Bachelor’s degree in music composition at the University of Malta, graduating with first-class honours under the supervision of Dr John Galea. Borg is currently reading for a Master of Arts in music composition under the mentorship of Annelies van Parys at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. He has also attended the 2023 Darmstadt Summer Course and masterclasses in composition with composers Isabel Mundry, Du Yun, Fabien Lévy and Thomas Simaku, amongst others.
