Piano Recital Featuring

Just a brief note about yesterday evening's well-attended piano recital. Bernice Sammut Attard has become onevof the leading Maltese pianists of her generation. It is a pity that she had at her disposal a piano of very dubious quality. Yet after an initial sensation that she had to come to grips with the programme, by the beginning of the Chopin's Étude in F minor, Op. 10, n.9 she took full command. She carried on with the Debussy and Glass pieces and conveyed the message despite all. Her crowning moment was a superb rendering of Beethoven's Appassionata with enough moments of epic proportions, at the end of which there was a standing ovation. She conceded with an encore, a Sonata in B minor by Domenico Scarlatti, which she tried to project in as sprightly a manner as possible.
